Truly unique, Strahan is a prime touring destination for wild and rugged Tasmanian holidays. Nestled on the banks of Macquarie Harbour, surrounded by majestic mountains on one side and the mighty Gordon River on the other, you will find yourself spoilt for choice of things to do in Strahan.

Strahan Village is an ideal base for exploring Tasmania’s stunning wilderness on your holidays. You might mistake this enchanting village for a picture postcard hidden away on Tasmania’s west coast, but Strahan is first and foremost a working fishing port and you will see the locals emptying their nets as you explore the waterfront.

Fancy a cruise to Bonnet Island to see the Little Penguins? Or perhaps you’d like to go platypus spotting on an easy stroll to the delightful Hogarth Falls? Being surrounded by World Heritage wilderness means there is no shortage of things to do: take a ride on the scenic West Coast Wilderness Railway, journey into the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park with Gordon River Cruises, watch Australia’s longest running theatre show ‘The Ship That Never Was’, or go sand-duning on Henty dunes.

What kind of adventure awaits you?

Strahan is situated on the West Coast of Tasmania on the edge of the Tasmanian Wilderness UNESCO World Heritage Area, and is home to flora and fauna of world importance and one of the last expanses of temperate rainforest found on the planet.

Discover the rugged beauty of ancient mountain peaks, tangled forests, deep and silent running rivers and crashing oceans. The flora and fauna of the area includes many species found only in Tasmania such as:

  • Tasmanian Devils
  • Leatherwood trees
  • Eastern barred Bandicoots
  • Brush-tail possums
  • Huon Pine
  • Little penguins
  • Platypus
  • Wallabies
  • White-bellied sea-eagles
  • Dolphins
  • Whales

Immerse yourself in Strahan’s culture and heritage with activities including exploring the museums, galleries and attractions of the historic fishing port – the setting for the remote and notorious convict settlement of Sarah Island and later a hub for mining operations and the export of Huon Pine across the world.

Today the town is host to numerous commercial interests including crayfish and abalone fisheries and a thriving salmon aquaculture industry.

Tastings are served as a flight and self-guided notes take you through the wines and whiskies step by step, ensuring you can take as much time as you like, fully appreciating their subtleties.

Your wine tasting includes five Tasmanian wines from the award-winning Josef Chromy, located in the scenic hills of Relbia, immediately south east of Launceston. Start with a sparkling wine, before progressing to a Pinot Gris and sauvignon blanc to complete your foray into Tasmanian whites.  Then to a Josef Chromy pinot noir and to finish your tasting, a glass of the ‘Ruby’ pinot noir port.

You whisky tastings starts with milder and progresses to stronger whiskies. Kick off with a lighter 'original’ Hellyer Road whisky and progress to an aged 10-year whisky.  Next in line is a pinot barrel-aged whisky and to finish, a peated single malt.

Snacks and tasting platters are available at View 42° Restaurant and Lounge Bar and free WiFi is available for all visitors.
