After spending a few months cooped up indoors, there’s no better excuse to get out and explore the Tassie wilderness. Tasmania’s west coast is a truly remarkable place, filled with natural beauty and opportunity for adventure around every corner. We sat down with a couple of our team members to unpack the ideal west coast itinerary for a long weekend away in winter.

Hobart - Strahan (5 hours + stops)

  • Stop in at the charming Curringa Farm. Take a tour and grab some delicious morning tea (inquire in advance about a farm tour). They have some of the best scone and homemade jam in Tasmania, available at their café on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays.
  • Travel to Derwent Bridge and visit the Wall in the Wilderness. It’s a constantly evolving 100-metre Huon Pion sculpture, depicting the history of Tasmania’s central highlands.
  • See Lake St Clair. Make sure to stop in at the visitor centre and bring a camera (the views are fantastic).
  • Stop at Nelson Falls – a short 20 minute return walk through mossy forest, myrtle and ferns to a beautiful set of falls.
  • Arrive at Strahan Village.
  • Dinner at and drinks by the fire at Hamer’s Bar & Bistro. Our favourite dish is a toss-up between the Slow Braised Cape Grim Beef Cheeks or the Hamer’s Beef & Cheese Burger.
  • Overnight at Strahan Village. For couples, we recommend the Hilltop Executive Harbour View room and the Village Waterfront Two Room Cottage for families.

Strahan – Gordon River

  • Start your day with a Gordon River Cruise. It’s true a bucket list experience! Consider treating yourself and cruise about Spirit of the Wild on the all-inclusive Premier Upper Deck.
  • Take a short afternoon stroll along one of Tasmania’s best short walks, to Hogarth Falls.
  • Drive out to Ocean Beach and watch the magical west coast sunset. Don’t forget to bring your jacket!
  • Enjoy a hearty meal and drink by the fire at Hamer’s Bar & Bistro. If you haven’t already, we recommend sampling the range of whiskies from Hellyer’s Road Distillery. Coupled with a warm fire on a cool winter’s night, it’s the perfect way to cap off the day.
  • Overnight at Strahan Village.

Strahan – Queenstown

Queenstown – Hobart (3 Hours)

  • Travel from Queenstown to Hobart.

Strahan is renowned for its unpredictable weather conditions year round – so it is very important to come prepared. We’ve outlined everything you need to know before you go here.
